The sweetfish in the Nagara River is called Gujo-ayu because of its beautiful appearances and high quality taste. Gujo-ayu won the victory at the ayu contest. The crystal-clear water in the Nagara River grow the Gujo-ayu.

Ayu, sweetfish has been very important part for Japanese and Japanese culture. Ayu has another name, 香魚(kougyo) which means sweet-scented fish.

The ayu season opens in early June every year. A lot of fishermen came to Gujo and enjoy fishing during summer. Then you can taste the special ayu dishes at restaurants in Gujo.
